How to Choose the Best Air Purifier (Podcast + Expert Insights)

home detox indoor air podcast Mar 20, 2020

Updated June 2026 to include detailed episode timestamps, a particle test demonstration video, and to complement our comprehensive air purifier buying guide.

When I first started researching air purifiers for my family in 2009, I was overwhelmed by the number of options, technologies, and price points. My oldest daughter was two years old and I was pregnant with my second daughter. I was learning that common indoor air contaminants could make their way inside our bodies, and I wanted to make the most thoughtful purchase possible to reduce as many toxic compounds possible in our home's indoor air.

Even though I countless hours in concentrated periods of time, identifying which air purifier to buy took several months of research. There were hundreds of options at wildly different prices, and it was difficult to determine which products could meaningfully reduce toxic exposures and not pose new health risks.

That is why I spoke with indoor air quality expert Vinnie Lobdell Jr., co-founder of IntelliPure and former president of HealthWay Family of Brands. In this episode, we discuss how to evaluate air purifiers based on performance, priorities, and budget.

This page is the podcast companion to my comprehensive buying guide. For a step-by-step framework to compare air purifiers for your home, start here:

This podcast complements that guide by offering expert perspective, real-world testing, and a deeper discussion of indoor air quality and air filtration.

Watch the Air Purifier Particle Test Video

In this video, Vinnie Lobdell Jr. compares air purifiers using a professional particle counter to measure the number of particles entering and exiting different machines.

This type of testing helps illustrate why consumers should look beyond marketing claims and instead evaluate real-world performance, including airflow, filtration efficiency, and system design.

What the Particle Counter Demonstration Shows

  • How many particles are present in the air before filtration
  • How particle levels change after air passes through each purifier
  • Why “HEPA” or “advanced filtration” claims may not reflect real performance
  • Why airflow and system design are critical when choosing an air purifier

The specific models shown in this video may not reflect current product offerings, so use this demonstration as an educational example rather than a current product comparison.

Air Purifier Podcast: What This Episode Covers

Indoor air quality matters because many everyday household items can contribute to indoor air pollution, including mattresses, furniture, carpets, cleaning products, candles, fragrance products, and building materials.

In this episode, we discuss how air purifiers may help reduce exposure to certain particles, allergens, fungi, bacteria, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

We also talk about why consumers should look beyond brand names and marketing claims when choosing an air purifier.

What You’ll Learn About Choosing an Air Purifier

Key Factors That Determine Air Purifier Performance

  • Why indoor air can be more polluted than outdoor air
  • How to identify the air quality problem you are trying to solve
  • Why airflow, filtration efficiency, and noise level all matter
  • What consumers should understand about HEPA filters
  • Why ultra-fine particles are an important concern
  • How VOCs from cleaning products, furniture, paint, fragrance, and mattresses affect indoor air
  • Why square footage claims can be misleading
  • Why air purification works best as a continuous process

How I Chose an Air Purifier: My Research and Due Diligence

Why Comparing Air Purifiers Is So Confusing

As I shared earlier, about 15 years ago, I began my deep dive into air purifiers when deciding what to use for my growing family. I spent countless hours comparing technologies, and trying to distinguish meaningful performance differences from marketing claims.

At one point, a trusted acquaintance strongly recommended IntelliPure. After my independent research, I became impressed and grew close to purchasing it. Before making that decision, I thought, Why not ask the owner if he'll talk to me about air filtration technologies, and how Intellipure compares to others? Fortunately, he quickly agreed to join me on my Practical Nontoxic Living podcast.

This podcast episode was part of that due diligence. My guest, Vinnie Lobdell Jr. and I discuss how air purifiers work, how to compare them, and what consumers should look for.

Since recording this episode, there have been changes in the company, including the discontinuation of the specific model I bought and recommended. This is why I created a new comprehensive shopping guide to help consumer comparison air purifiers. I create something to help myself, which can teach you how to evaluate air purifiers so you can make the best purchase available to you.

How to Choose the Right Air Purifier for Your Needs

Common Air Quality Problems an Air Purifier Can Address

There is no single “best” air purifier for everyone. The right choice depends on what you are trying to address:

  • Dust and allergens
  • Smoke or wildfire pollution
  • VOCs and chemical fumes
  • Mold, bacteria, or fungi
  • Ultra-fine particles
  • Microplastics and nanoplastics
  • Bedroom air quality
  • Large open spaces versus smaller rooms

Before buying an air purifier, clarify your priorities.

Final Advice: How to Choose an Air Purifier With Confidence

Air purification is not a one-time event. It works best as part of an ongoing strategy to improve the air you breathe every day.

The most important lesson from this episode is to look beyond marketing claims and choose an air purifier based on your actual needs, room size, filtration performance, airflow, and whether you will realistically use it consistently.
